In short: a conduit for water (aquae ductus).

Het is een kanaal voor het vervoeren van water over oneffenheden in de bodem naar bijvoorbeeld thermen en reservoirs, maar ook naar akkers (irrigatie) en fonteinen (Rome).

It's a system for channeling water from far away sources, over irregularities in the soil into towns, to i.e. a reservoir or cistern, but also to the fields for irrigation purposes and fountains and baths (Rome).
